Choosing Mattress Size

When looking at different mattress sizes, there are many to choose from. However, the mattress you choose is ultimately dependent on your personal preference and the reason for the bed.

A twin mattress is good for smaller children or a guest room. Once your children are teens, opting for a Twin XL may be the way to go. This can also give adults a bed to sleep in during weekend visits.

A full mattress is wider than a Twin but still smaller than a Queen, so this may be a good option for single adults or someone who does not mind snuggling up close.

A Queen mattress is the most popular size and is perfect for couples while still giving them their own room.

A King size mattress that offers additional 16 inches in width. A king bed is the same height as a Queen, but it does give you more space for sleeping or watching movies.

While many believe the California King is the widest mattress you can purchase, this is not true. It is four inches shorter. While it lacks the extra width, it is longer than a typical King bed by four inches which makes this bed perfect for taller individuals.

Mattress Styles

The size of your mattress is not the only important thing to consider when purchasing a new mattress; you must also consider the mattress style. Below are a few common mattress styles you can choose from.

Innerspring

This is the most common type of mattress where coiled springs offer support and comfort. The higher the number of springs, the higher in quality and typically price. These mattresses are best for stomach and back sleepers and if you prefer to stay cool when sleeping because latex and foam mattresses retain body heat.

Latex Foam

A latex mattress is made from rubber tree sap or a synthetic source, and these beds are firmer and bouncier. Typically, those who purchase these mattresses suffer from back pain, are stomach sleepers, and suffer from allergies.

Memory Foam

This mattress is made from visco-elastic and helps lower stress on your body. The higher density, the firmer the mattress will be and typically more durable. If you suffer from chronic pain and fatigue, this is your mattress. Also, if you are a side sleeper or your partner likes to toss and turn at night, you may find comfort in a memory foam mattress.

How to Clean a Mattress

When was the last time you cleaned your mattress and not just your bedding? Many people do not think about cleaning their mattresses or that upkeeping your mattress will help prolong the longevity. To clean your mattress, start by removing all bedding, and mattress protector, and vacuuming the bed. You will need to ensure you get into the cracks of the headboard, bed frame, and if there is any stitching on the mattress.

Next, check your mattress for any spills or stains that you may need to spot clean. If so, a good upholstery or enzyme cleaner will help remove these stains quickly. Once you have cleaned any stains, deodorize the mattress with baking soda. You can typically use a whole box on the mattress and let this sit for a few hours. Now it is time to vacuum up the baking soda and put on your clean sheets and bedding.
