What way should a ceiling fan turn in the summer?

Ceiling fan blades should turn counterclockwise during the summer to push air downwards. When a ceiling fan is pushing the air down, it helps keep the room's temperature consistent. Ceiling fans are energy-efficient and help save on electricity to cut cooling costs. In the winter months, a ceiling fan spinning clockwise can help cut costs on your heating bill by distributing heat throughout your room. Because warm air rises, the ceiling fan pushes it back towards the floor.

How to measure a ceiling fan for a specific room

First, you must determine the square footage of your room by measuring the length times the width. Now you can determine what size of ceiling fan you need based on the square footage.

To determine the size of the ceiling fan, you will need to know the diameter of the blade span or sweep. If the fan has an even number of blades, measure the end of the opposite blade from the tip. If the fan has an odd number of blades, measure the blade's tip to the center to determine the radius. Double that number, and you will have the diameter of the fan.

• For rooms up to 144 square feet, you will need a 42-inch sweep
• 144-225 square feet, you will need a 44-inch sweep
• 225-400 square feet, you will need a 52-inch sweep

If your room is larger than 400 square feet, installing more than one ceiling fan is recommended. Large rooms need more sweep and a heavier fan motor.

How to replace a ceiling fan

Here are the basic steps to replace an existing ceiling fan or light fixture with a new ceiling fan. Keep in mind, once installed, the ceiling fan blade tips should be at least 30 inches from the walls, and the bottom edges of the blades should be at least 7 feet above the floor. Remember to read all instructions that come with your new ceiling fan as some models may be different.

• Turn off the power at the breaker box. Use a voltage tester to make sure there is no power to the fan.
• Remove ceiling fan or light fixture. You will need a basic screwdriver and someone to help hold the fixture in place. Typically, you will remove the light fixture, fan blades, and then the fan base.
• Install the ceiling bracket with the screws that are included in your new fan.
• Bring the wires through the center hole.
• Attach canopy by hooking your fan base to the ceiling bracket.
• Connect the wires by starting with the ground wires, then the remote and neutral wires. Use wire caps to secure the connections to keep wires from slipping.
• Screw canopy base into place
• Attach blades by screwing them to the canopy. Follow the directions included with your new fan.
• Attach the switch housing using the screws provided. Secure the wire plug to the lower switch housing. This is the switch that turns on the fan.
• Add the cover plate over the housing unit. You are ready to power on the ceiling fan.
