GE® 7.0 Cu. Ft. Manual Defrost Chest Freezer (FCM7SKWW) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Icebox These smaller Chest Freezers - the 10 cu. ft. and smaller class - are all now Chinese built commodity items. So you'll find identical units, under a variety of names. The only real choice to make in buying one, is which distributor you want to deal with if there's ever a problem with it. For that, General Electric is unsurpassed - with good warranty coverage, and the largest network of local technicians in the country. This GE model does provide two Baskets for convenience items. Many competitors in this size class don't. This one does exactly what it's supposed to do - maintains COLD at around ZERO degrees, with a working range of +5° to -5°. Real good for Ice Cream stock ups, keeping it solid so ice crystals don't form and degrade it - and best for longer term storage of Meats and other frozen goods. Frozen foods are shipped at ZERO, and should be kept there. For comparison, the Freezer section of your Refrigerator typically operates in the 20°-30° range. Cold enough to safely keep most items frozen for a week or two - but you really need colder for longer term storage. Those who are new to Chest Freezers, may have concerns over their being Manual Defrost. Don't sweat it, as you'll only need to do it about once a year, and its not complicated. The hardest part is finding alternate storage for your frozen stock for a few hours, while you're doing it. Because Cold air sinks and Hot air rises, Chest Freezers take on very little of the humid outside air when open, which minimizes frost formation. In contrast, an Upright Freezer loses a lot of its Cold air and takes in a blast of Warm humid air, every time it's opened - and thus is much more frost prone. This is why Uprights often have Auto Defrost - and use twice the power, and typically cost 2-3 times the price, of a comparably sized Chest Freezer.
