Washer and Dryer Types

Many considerations come into play when shopping for a new washer and dryer – this includes choosing a model that will fit where it needs to go. Whether you have a standard laundry room, a closet, or a basement, there are some things to consider to help better suit your arrangements.

Full-Size Washer and Dryer

There are two types of full-size washers and dryers –side-by-side and a stacked washer and dryer.

Side-by-Side: this is the most common type of washer and dryer. Typically, washers go on the left and dryers on the right because of the door hinges. Most dryers are hinged on the right – this helps when putting your wet clothes from the washer to the dryer; you are not reaching over the door.

Stacked: most front-loading washers allow you to stack your washer on top of the dryer using a stacking kit. Stacking your washer and dryer can help you save space. However, one thing to consider is the stacked machines; reaching the control panel on the washer may be difficult.

Space-Saving Washer and Dryer

Stackable Washer and Dryer: also referred to as laundry centers. This is where the dryer is suspended above the top-load washer and is connected as one. However, the capacity is typically small as they are not full washers and dryers. Since this is the case – these units are best for small spaces such as a laundry closet.

Compact Models: some washers and dryers are made to fit in smaller spaces – this model can be placed side by side or stacked with a compatible stand.

Washer / Dryer Combo: this type of washer and dryer is more commonly used in Europe than in the United States. Combo washers and dryers wash and dry within the same unit. This is especially good for small apartments, condos, or a cabin. The Capacity is often limited, and wash and dry times can be longer than your typical washer and dryer set.

Choosing Your Size

Before committing to your new washer and dryer – you must first measure your space. You will need to consider the baseboards, door frames, and trim. Also, you will need to ensure you have left enough free space around the appliances so they do not rub against each other during loads. Below are some tips when measuring.

  • Width – Leave between 1” and 3” on the sides between the appliances to allow air circulation.
  • Depth – Leave 4” – 6” in the back for vents, hookups, and cords. You will need 21” – 25” for front-load washers and dryers to allow the door to swing open.
  • Height – for top-load washers, leave a minimum of 20” for door clearance. If the front-load washer is being installed under the counter, you will need to leave 1” of space so you can move them if needed.

When installing your new appliances, consider the water hookup and power outlet for the washer. For the dryer, consider the placement of the outlet to ensure they match up with your new washer and dryer.
